Eduardo Kobra recreates his Oscar Niemeyer mural on Edifício Ragi Buainain at Praça Oswaldo Cruz, using new Coral colors to honor São Paulo.

São Paulo is receiving a new intervention by artist Eduardo Kobra honoring Oscar Niemeyer. The project is supported by Coral, AkzoNobel’s decorative paint brand. In addition, the repainting marks the city’s 472nd anniversary.

The original mural was created more than a decade ago and covered the side of a building about 52 meters high. It became a landmark in São Paulo’s urban landscape. This way, the restoration keeps the architect’s memory alive.

    Artwork at Praça Oswaldo Cruz

The new version can now be seen on the façade of Edifício Ragi Buainain at Praça Oswaldo Cruz. The work recalls Niemeyer projects in the city such as Edifício Copan, Memorial da América Latina, and Oca at Ibirapuera Park. As a result, the mural reinforces the link between street art and architecture.

The initiative also highlights preservation and renewal of urban art. In São Paulo, Kobra already has more than fifty works. In addition, the artist says the Niemeyer mural played an important role in his career.

“Arte de Restaurar” and the mural concept

Kobra says the piece was one of the first murals in that format in São Paulo. He explains he inserted geometric shapes of major buildings into the architect’s face, based on a photo by Nana Moraes, who authorized its use. In this way, references include Palácio do Planalto, Copan, and Pampulha.

“This was one of the first murals in this format in São Paulo and it is very important in my career, which always dialogues with history and memory. I had the idea of inserting geometric forms of major buildings on the face of the great architect, captured in a photo by Nana Moraes, who authorized its use: Palácio do Planalto, Copan, Pampulha, all by Niemeyer, are there.”

The artist also mentions Arte de Restaurar, a project created to recover large urban murals. According to him, the initiative seeks to raise awareness among public entities and partners about the importance of restoring these works. Finally, Kobra thanks supporters for enabling the repainting.

    Paints and colors used

The new painting is carried out with Coral Paints, an AkzoNobel brand. The company provided nearly 80 liters of surface-prep products and paints. In addition, the work uses lines such as Coralit and Proteção Sol & Chuva.

According to the material, Proteção Sol & Chuva technology forms a flexible rubberized film. This way, it follows wall movement and helps prevent cracks and water infiltration. The product also fights algae and mold and aims to increase color durability.

Selected tones include Pedra Valiosa, Rosa Vibrante, Verde Bandeira, and Azul Del Rey. As a result, the mural keeps Kobra’s signature visual language of intense color. The piece dialogues with Niemeyer’s legacy and the city’s current landscape.

“Kobra’s work is rich in color, emotion, and meaning. Therefore, it connects strongly with Coral. Color is part of our DNA, and we believe in its power to transform spaces, spark reflection, and connect with people. Supporting this repainting is also a way to value art as cultural expression and as a living element of the city.”
