Carioca da Gema celebrates Samba Day with a black women’s talk, Afro-Brazilian culture focus and a special samba tribute show.
Afro-Brazilian culture and female voices in focus
A Lapa landmark for 25 years, Carioca da Gema will celebrate Samba Day on December 2 with a special program. The night is dedicated to Afro-Brazilian culture and to the black women who keep this tradition alive.
The agenda features a talk circle, samba-focused repertoires and surprise performances throughout the evening. In this way, the venue reinforces its role as one of Rio de Janeiro’s most emblematic samba stages.
“Samba Day is one of the most important dates for us. Honoring black women on this day means recognizing the roots of this music, its strength and the ancestry that keeps samba alive,” says Pedro Henrique Alvim.
Talk “A Voz da Mulher Negra” opens the evening
From 7:30 p.m., the public is invited to the talk “A Voz da Mulher Negra” (The Voice of the Black Woman), with free admission. The conversation brings together four women who represent different expressions of Black culture, art and history in Rio.
The session will be mediated by singer Flávia Saolli, part of Carioca da Gema’s regular music lineup. Her voice, marked by samba and ancestry, will guide the discussion on female leadership and the importance of the black voice in Brazilian music and identity.
Guests include Dida Nascimento, owner of Dida Bar, a restaurant specializing in African cuisine. She will share her entrepreneurial journey and discuss Afro-Brazilian gastronomy as a form of identity and cultural resistance.
The panel also welcomes Rojane Fradique, a Bahian model who brings Black beauty to runways and ad campaigns. Her talk will address self-esteem and fashion as a tool for empowerment.
Rounding out the lineup, Carla Silva, a tour guide and expert on Pequena África, will highlight the preservation of Rio’s port district memory, considered a cradle of Afro-Brazilian culture. She will show how tourism can help promote recognition and historical value.
Três à Varejo pays tribute to samba history
At 8:30 p.m., samba group Três à Varejo takes the stage with a special tribute show for Samba Day. The repertoire focuses on the genre’s history and its resilience over time.
The setlist includes classics such as “Não Deixe o Samba Morrer”, “Agoniza, Mas Não Morre” and “Desde que o Samba é Samba”, underscoring samba’s strength across the decades. The night is designed to honor the past, present and future of the rhythm.
In one of Rio’s most traditional samba venues, the event invites audiences to experience an evening marked by identity, ancestry and music. Carioca da Gema once again reaffirms its commitment to the culture that shaped the Lapa neighborhood.
