Spectacle directed by Marina Vianna and Caio Blat returns to Teatro Carlos Gomes from January 8 to 18 with a contemporary take on Dostoevsky’s classic.

The award-winning “Os Irmãos Karamazov” comes back to Rio de Janeiro for a short season. The production revisits Fiódor Dostoiévski‘s classic. In addition, it keeps theater alive through national circulation.

After sold-out shows across Brazil, the play lands at Teatro Carlos Gomes. Audiences will rediscover an accessible and intense adaptation. Thus, it connects with current Brazilian issues.

    Contemporary adaptation of Dostoevsky

Direction comes from Marina Vianna and Caio Blat. They offer a modern reading of the novel, preserving philosophical depth. Sigmund Freud called it a “masterpiece of humanity”.

The cast features 13 diverse artists, including Nina Tomsic, Pedro Henrique Muller, Catharina Caiado, Sol Miranda, Priscilla Rozenbaum, Lucas Oranmian, Arthur Braganti, Thiago Rebello, Juliete Viana, Maria Luiza Aquino, Sheila Martins and Sofia Badim. Caio Blat also performs.

“This spectacle stems from over ten years of study and maturation. That time allowed us not to make a reverent adaptation, but a living, critical and contemporary one.”

Caio Blat emphasizes the long maturation process. The play condenses the story around the central crime’s three days. In this way, it delivers urgency and closeness to viewers.

    Polyphony, music and accessibility

The adaptation draws from 10 years of study by Caio Blat and Manoel Candeias. Creative rehearsals lasted four months with the cast. Yet, it aims to popularize the author in Brazil.

The staging embraces the novel’s polyphony, a concept from Mikhail Bakhtin. Multiple voices coexist without moral hierarchy. Moreover, the chorus and overlapping lines build collective dramaturgy.

Live music heightens scenes and emotional impact. The outcome is an immersive, modern experience. Thus, the classic resonates with today’s sensibilities.

Accessibility has been core since conception. Libras interpreter-artists join the cast onstage. As a result, the production commits to true inclusivity.

“This is what drives me in this project from day one: to create a truly accessible spectacle. Accessibility is not an afterthought, but a creative lens that inspires and expands possibilities.”

    Award-winning costumes and team

Maria Duarte, production director, stresses creative accessibility. The show won Prêmio Bibi Ferreira for Best Costume by Isabela Capeto. It is nominated for Prêmio Shell in the same category.

Costumes feature handmade, sustainable white pieces. They symbolize collectivity and timelessness. On the other hand, Babu Santana won Best Supporting Actor.

The team includes movement direction by Amália Lima, lighting by Gustavo Hadba and Sarah Salgado, set design by Moa Batsow. Raíssa Couto handles accessibility. Artistic production is by Luisa Arraes.

    National tour success

The Rio return follows tours in São Paulo and Minas Gerais. All sessions sold out. Therefore, the Teatro Carlos Gomes season expects full houses.
