“Horizon of Khufu” brings a 45-minute VR journey inside the Great Pyramid of Giza to the CNP Cultural Space at Shopping Cidade São Paulo.
From Paris to São Paulo’s Avenida Paulista
After premiering in Paris and attracting more than 2 million visitors worldwide, the immersive experience “Horizon of Khufu: A Journey to Ancient Egypt” is coming to Brazil. From December 19, 2025, the VR expedition will be on show at the CNP Cultural Space for Virtual Reality, located in Shopping Cidade São Paulo on Avenida Paulista. It offers local audiences the chance to “travel” to Egypt without leaving the city.
The experience takes visitors to the heart of the Great Pyramid of Giza, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Using virtual reality, the project blends culture and entertainment in an interactive format. It was developed in collaboration with an Egyptology professor from Harvard University, ensuring historical and scientific accuracy.
A 4,500-year leap through time and space
Also known as the Great Pyramid of Giza, the pyramid of Khufu stands 146 meters tall and is the largest Egyptian-style pyramid in the world. Built between 2590 and 2565 BC on the Giza Plateau, it was designed as the pharaoh’s tomb. The immersive expedition invites visitors to revisit this landmark of ancient architecture from a new perspective.
“Horizon of Khufu” allows participants to explore areas that are normally restricted to the public on-site. The experience is designed to engage visitors physically and emotionally, leveraging the capabilities of state-of-the-art virtual reality. As a result, each person feels as though they are truly walking through corridors, chambers and landscapes of Ancient Egypt.
Panoramic flights, burial chambers and a Nile boat ride
The 45-minute program combines several immersive scenes. It includes a flight over the Giza Plateau, with sweeping views of the pyramids and surrounding desert. Visitors then “climb” effortlessly to the top of the Great Pyramid for a breathtaking 360-degree panorama.
The experience continues with an exploration of the pyramid’s corridors and burial chambers during an embalming ceremony, as well as a visit to the Queen’s Chamber. Another highlight is a boat trip along the Nile to witness Khufu’s funeral. Additional scenes round out the journey, always combining historical storytelling with sensory immersion.
Grounded in research and large-scale VR technology
To ensure accuracy, the expedition is the result of years of research and on-site data collection. It was developed in partnership with Peter Der Manuelian, a Harvard Egyptologist specializing in funerary architecture and the Giza necropolis, and with the Giza Project team. The Immersive Expeditions concept is built to guarantee that all information is grounded in verified architectural, scientific and historical data.
Produced by Emissive under the Excurio label, the Immersive Expeditions are designed to handle high visitor volumes. Wearing immersive devices, participants can move freely across spaces of up to 1,000 m², while seeing the avatars of other visitors. This technology minimizes the sense of isolation that often accompanies VR experiences and reinforces the feeling of a shared journey.
International partnership and sponsors
“Horizon of Khufu: A Journey to Ancient Egypt” is a creation of Excurio and the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle de Paris, produced by Bonfilm. In São Paulo, it is presented at the CNP Cultural Space for Virtual Reality. Main sponsors include CNP Seguros Holding Brasil, Crédit Agricole and Essilor/Luxottica (Varilux), with support from Brazil’s Ministry of Culture and the São Paulo State Government.
The project also counts on key partners such as Air France (official carrier), Accor Group and Indigo, and institutional support from the French Embassy in Brazil. Together, they help bring an international-level immersive cultural experience to the Brazilian public.
