Sir El Tom, Elton John tribute, set for one-night show in Rio

Sir El Tom brings an Elton John tribute to Qualistage on Jan. 22, featuring major hits plus rare tracks and fan favorites from the catalog.

Sir El Tom, billed as the world’s leading tribute to Elton John, is set for a one-night performance at Qualistage. The show takes place on Thursday, January 22, in Rio de Janeiro. Moreover, the artist arrives directly from London for the date.

Tom Cridland began performing Elton John’s music as part of his recovery from alcoholism. Next, he built a career as a singer, songwriter, producer, and pianist. In this way, he became known as “Sir El Tom.”

From recovery to larger stages

During the Covid-19 lockdowns, Tom learned piano in a short period of time. The practice became part of his personal recovery process. Meanwhile, his repertoire and stagecraft developed quickly.

Within a few years, he moved from pub gigs to leading shows in theaters, amphitheaters, and arenas. On the other hand, the project kept its focus on honoring Elton John’s body of work. Therefore, the performance promises a dedicated take on the British artist’s catalog.

Setlist of hits and rarities

The setlist features well-known classics as well as rarities and fan favorites. Highlights include “Rocket Man” and “Saturday Night’s Alright (For Fighting).” In addition, the show includes songs such as “The Bitch Is Back” and “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me.”

Other titles on the program include “Crocodile Rock” and “I’m Still Standing.” Next come tracks like “Bennie and the Jets” and “Your Song.” Finally, the performance lists “Candle In The Wind,” “Tiny Dancer,” “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” and “Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding,” among others.

Studio work and collaborations

Offstage, Tom works as a songwriter and producer. He says he has worked in the studio with artists such as The Stylistics, Shania Twain, Ronnie Wood, and Steve Lukather. In addition, he cites sessions with Nigel Olsson, Davey Johnstone, and Sir Elton John himself.
