A specialist says plastic surgery in summer can be safe, but patients must avoid sun exposure, stay hydrated, and strictly follow post-op care.

During summer, interest in aesthetic procedures and plastic surgery tends to rise. Many people seek changes for vacations and warmer weather. However, higher temperatures and stronger sunlight can directly affect recovery.

Dr. Hugo Sabath, a plastic surgeon at Clínica Libria, says summer is not an absolute contraindication. Still, it requires careful planning and strict medical guidance. In addition, patients must commit to post-operative care.

“Plastic surgery can be performed at any time of year, as long as the patient is properly guided. The issue is not summer itself, but poor post-op care, especially regarding sun exposure, hydration, rest, and correct medication use.”

    Summer myths and facts

A common myth claims plastic surgery cannot be done in summer. According to the specialist, that is not true. Therefore, what changes is the level of care required after surgery.

He explains that heat can increase swelling and discomfort. In addition, it may raise infection risk if patients fail to follow instructions. On the other hand, with proper follow-up, outcomes can be as safe as in any other season.

Another myth says sweat can “open stitches.” The surgeon notes that sweat alone does not compromise surgery. However, poor hygiene and excessive exposure can increase infection risk.

    Procedures often better suited

Some procedures may fit summer better, especially less invasive options. They can also require less time away from daily activities. Next, the specialist lists examples commonly considered more favorable.

These include facial procedures such as deep plane techniques, blepharoplasty, and neck lifting. Minimally invasive surgeries and non-surgical rejuvenation treatments are also mentioned. In addition, small body corrections may be considered if patients can follow rest requirements.

“Facial surgeries, for example, often have a smoother recovery in summer, as long as the patient avoids direct sun and properly uses sunscreen and protective accessories.”

    What to avoid in summer

More extensive procedures may require extra caution in summer. Surgeries with longer recovery can be more affected by heat. In this way, major body surgeries, such as abdominoplasty combined with liposuction, demand stricter planning.

“Heat can intensify swelling and cause greater discomfort in larger body surgeries. In those cases, we assess each patient individually, including their routine and ability to follow post-op instructions.”

    Sun and heat risks

Inadequate sun exposure after surgery is one of the biggest summer risks. Sunlight can cause permanent dark spots and compromise scars. In addition, it can delay healing.

“Solar radiation can cause hyperpigmentation in scars, making them more visible and harder to treat later. That’s why avoiding sun is not an aesthetic recommendation, it’s a medical necessity.”

Dehydration, which is more common in hot weather, can also interfere with healing. Therefore, proper fluid intake becomes part of recovery. This care should follow the surgeon’s guidance.

    Essential post-op care

The specialist advises avoiding direct sun, especially in the first weeks. He also recommends strict use of sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses. In addition, he highlights hydration and rest according to medical instructions.

Patients should avoid intense physical activity during the prescribed period. Following all medical guidance and medications is essential. Finally, the surgeon stresses that discipline strongly impacts results.

“The success of plastic surgery depends not only on the operation itself, but on the patient’s behavior during recovery. Commitment is essential for a good outcome.”

    Choosing a qualified surgeon

Dr. Hugo Sabath warns that patients must choose properly licensed professionals. He emphasizes formal training in plastic surgery and proven experience. As a result, patients improve safety and reduce health risks.

“These procedures require deep anatomical knowledge, technical precision, and appropriate structure. Choosing an unqualified professional can put the patient’s health, and even their life, at risk.”

He recommends checking whether the doctor is a member of the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery (SBCP). In addition, he suggests seeking references, visiting the clinic, and clarifying doubts before deciding. This way, patients move forward with more confidence.
