New Year’s Eve by boat: five Rio de Janeiro routes to watch the fireworks from the sea

From Copacabana to Angra, Paraty and Búzios, lanchas offer exclusive “camarotes” at sea for a memorable New Year’s Eve in Rio de Janeiro.

Lanchas turn into private sky-view “boxes”

With crowded beaches, fully booked hotels and parties all along the waterfront, Rio de Janeiro remains Brazil’s most coveted New Year’s Eve destination. More and more visitors are choosing to watch Copacabana’s fireworks from the sea, turning motorboats into private “camarotes” for the countdown, with comfort and privileged views.

A survey by Booking.com confirms that both Brazilian and international travellers prefer the iconic celebration on the Rio seafront. At the same time, those seeking a quieter ambience are heading to other coastal spots in the state, such as Angra dos Reis, Paraty, Búzios, Arraial do Cabo and Cabo Frio, to celebrate on board.

Rising demand for well-equipped boats

Specialised nautical tourism companies, such as Ultraboats in Angra dos Reis, the official representative of Triton Yachts, report growing demand at this time of year. Clients look for boats with generous social areas, swim platforms and comfortable overnight accommodation, turning the charter into a full holiday experience.

Among the most requested models for the big night are boats around 38 feet, seen as ideal for day trips and spending a few days on board with groups of 12 to 14 people. Versatile layouts allow guests to explore different landscapes during the same holiday while avoiding crowds on land.

“Spending New Year’s Eve on a boat has become a dream for many tourists choosing Rio. Besides escaping the crowds on the sand, people get their own ‘camarote’ to watch the fireworks, with comfort, safety and the chance to navigate through different sceneries over the same holiday. We have noticed increasing interest in versatile models, such as the Triton Flyer 38, which combine great seakeeping with generous social areas, a gourmet space and a cabin for rest, making the New Year’s experience at sea even more special,” says Allan Cechelero, director of Triton Yachts.

He adds that many owners and charter companies design routes that start at quieter islands during the day and end at strategic points near the fireworks at night. “The state of Rio de Janeiro is one of the best places in the world to celebrate New Year’s Eve on board, whether along the Costa Verde or near the Guanabara Bay, with views of Copacabana. The network of marinas, waterfront restaurants and specialised services turns each trip into a complete leisure experience,” he notes.

Guanabara Bay and Copacabana fireworks

Those who want to be in Brazil’s postcard city on New Year’s Eve often head to Guanabara Bay, one of the most popular spots to watch Copacabana’s fireworks from the sea. Boats depart from marinas and yacht clubs in Rio and Niterói, sailing towards the beachline to follow the show from the water. Guests enjoy unobstructed views and a more controlled environment.

Angra dos Reis: islands, coves and starry skies

A classic in nautical tourism, Angra dos Reis becomes even busier at the end of the year. Its hundreds of islands and sheltered coves allow visitors to combine relaxing days in emerald, clear waters with lively nights on board. During the day, boats anchor at spots such as Praia do Dentista and Ilha Cataguases for swimming and social gatherings.

At midnight, many crews choose protected anchorages to watch fireworks launched from clubs and hotels in the area. This way, they avoid crowded streets while still enjoying the illuminated sky. Local marinas and service providers offer support for fuelling, provisioning and logistics.

Paraty and Praia Vermelha: heritage charm at sea

In Paraty, New Year’s Eve has a more intimate feel, blending the charm of the Historic Centre with boat trips to nearby islands and beaches. Sheltered spots such as Ilha Comprida, Praia do Lula, Ilha dos Cocos, Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Verde attract boats for sunbathing, snorkelling and on-board gatherings before the countdown.

From areas like Praia Vermelha, it is possible to watch the city’s celebrations from a distance in a quieter setting. At the same time, the short distance to marinas and piers along the Costa Verde makes it easy to switch between land and sea throughout the holiday.

Búzios and Arraial do Cabo: clear waters and floating “audiences”

In the Região dos Lagos, Búzios and Arraial do Cabo are among the most popular routes for a stylish New Year at sea. In Búzios, beaches such as João Fernandes, Azeda and Azedinha often host true floating “audiences” of boats, which line up to watch the fireworks and enjoy the sunset.

Arraial do Cabo, famous for its turquoise waters, features iconic stops like Ilha do Farol and Gruta Azul, perfect for the last swims of the year. At night, boats move back to sheltered areas, from where they can see fireworks displays along different stretches of the coast, supported by nearby marinas and docks.

Cabo Frio: open sea with safe anchorages

Cabo Frio is a strong choice for those who enjoy open-sea navigation but still want safe bays to anchor on New Year’s Eve. During the day, spots such as Ilha do Japonês, Praia das Conchas and Ilha do Papagaio welcome boats looking for clear waters and short trails on land.

At night, boats usually split between areas near Praia do Forte, the city’s main party venue, and quieter corners. These spots are ideal for families who prefer dining on board, night swims and a wide-angle view of fireworks along the shoreline.
