Lumisphere immersive show enters final weeks in Rio

Free immersive Lumisphere experience nears its final days at Museum of Tomorrow as survey reveals Brazilians’ optimistic vision of the future.

Immersive installation reaches final stretch

The Lumisphere Experience, installed at Praça Mauá, is entering its final weeks at Rio’s Museum of Tomorrow. The free attraction remains open to the public until 18 December 2025. In addition, the project is presented in partnership with the international organization Visions2030.

Comprising three domes with 360° projections, sound and interactive storytelling, the installation invites visitors to imagine positive futures. Thus, participants’ visions are transformed into images displayed on LED screens, forming a collective panorama of desirable futures.

According to Carey Lovelace, founder of Visions2030, Lumisphere seeks to inspire new perspectives in the face of global challenges. However, the project adopts an optimistic approach to the future, rather than relying on fear or dystopian scenarios.

Survey shows rising optimism

Created by Visions2030 in partnership with the Minds Over Matter studio, the experience is also being studied by the Institute for the Future (IFTF). The institute evaluates the installation’s impact on public imagination and confidence in better futures. Preliminary findings indicate a noticeable increase in optimism among visitors.

After visiting Lumisphere, more participants reported believing that the world can change positively in the coming years. Furthermore, many said they feel empowered to influence these transformations, reinforcing a sense of social agency and responsibility.

The so-called “Future Census”, with more than 26,000 participants, offers clues about how Brazilians imagine tomorrow. The survey shows a strong desire for abundant nature, especially beaches, forests and mountains, along with small communities closely integrated with the natural environment.

Nature, community and sustainable tech

Results also highlight a vision of sustainable technology, including solar energy, reforestation and water harvesting. In this way, the imagined future is peaceful, sunny and harmonious. Explicitly dystopian or catastrophic visions appeared only rarely in participants’ answers.

The survey took place between October and early December 2025. At the end of the experience, each participant receives an AI-generated image based on their responses, accompanied by reflections on their ideal futures. Thus, the visit becomes a personalized and contemplative journey.

Cultural access and environmental education

The exhibition also serves as an invitation to democratize culture and strengthen environmental education. In November, Visions2030 coordinated visits by more than 120 children supported by NGOs working in vulnerable areas of Rio de Janeiro.

Children from neighborhoods such as Engenho da Rainha, Duque de Caxias, Cavalcanti and Anchieta experienced the immersive environment of The Lumisphere. As a result, the project broadened access to debates on climate, the city and the right to urban space for communities often excluded from such cultural circuits.

“The exhibition, which addresses climate issues, technology, the city and the right to urban space, was especially meaningful. Seeing children from a community often viewed only as a ‘transit place’ engaging with themes of urban belonging and use of public spaces was remarkable. It was a successful, pleasant day, full of enriching moments for everyone involved,” says Leandro Ferreira, from the Frente Cavalcanti organization.

The Museum of Tomorrow is managed by the Institute for Development and Management (IDG). The project is an initiative of the City of Rio de Janeiro, conceived in partnership with the Roberto Marinho Foundation, linked to Grupo Globo. Moreover, the museum stands as a successful example of public–private collaboration.

The museum counts Banco Santander Brasil as its master sponsor. Shell, Motiva and Instituto Cultural Vale serve as institutional supporters, alongside a wide network of sponsors including ArcelorMittal, Engie, IBM, Volvo and TAG. This broad backing helps sustain a dynamic cultural and educational agenda.

With Globo as a strategic partner and co-sponsorship from B3, Mercado Livre and Águas do Rio, the museum also receives support from Bloomberg, Colgate, EMS, EGTC, EY, Granado, Rede D’Or, Caterpillar, TechnipFMC and White Martins. Additionally, DataPrev, Fitch Ratings and SBM OffShore back projects through municipal incentive laws, while media partners include Amil Paradiso, Rádio Mix, Revista Piauí, Canal Curta ON, and legal advisory from Luz e Ferreira Advogados.
