Attorney Vinicius Bicalho is the only Brazilian featured on The New York Times’ 2025 list of standout immigration lawyers, in a year marked by tougher U.S. migration policies.

Sole Brazilian on the 2025 NYT list

In a year defined by major shifts in U.S. migration policy, driven by stricter guidelines under the new Donald Trump administration, one Brazilian caught the attention of the American press once again. For the third consecutive year, attorney Vinicius Bicalho appears on The New York Times’ list of prominent immigration professionals. The recognition consolidates his position among the most influential names in the field.

Licensed to practice in the United States, Brazil and Portugal, holding a master’s degree from the University of Southern California (USC) and a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA), Bicalho leads Bicalho Consultoria Legal. In 2025, he is the only Brazilian mentioned in the ranking, released at a particularly sensitive moment for those working with migration. The year has been marked by policy revisions, tighter enforcement and new regulatory proposals.

    Standing out amid legal uncertainty

Experts in the sector point out that being on the 2025 list carries special weight. The legal framework for immigration has been described as unstable, generating uncertainty for both migrants and practitioners. Within this turbulent context, Bicalho’s work stands out for his ability to quickly interpret changes and handle complex cases.

His practice focuses on supporting skilled professionals, families and companies seeking lawful pathways to live or work in the United States. Rapid adaptation to new rules and a clear reading of official guidance have become key differentiators. As a result, Bicalho’s name has gained even more visibility among Brazilians considering migration.

    Growing international media recognition

The New York Times is not the only outlet covering his work. Publications such as the Wall Street Journal, USA Today and the Los Angeles Times have also highlighted his practice. These features reinforce his international profile and the role of Bicalho Consultoria Legal in the global immigration arena.

The increased exposure coincides with a surge in demand for immigration guidance. In an ever more complex system, access to specialized counsel has become critical. Consequently, Bicalho’s work resonates not only in the media but also with clients and peers.

Record demand from Brazilians seeking U.S. immigration advice

Data from Bicalho Consultoria Legal illustrate the scale of 2025’s challenges. Demand from Brazilian nationals for legal advice on moving to the United States has doubled this year. Between January and November, the firm handled 8,000 consultations, 85% of them focused exclusively on U.S.-related cases.

This is the highest volume recorded since the firm was founded. According to the office, the increase is a direct result of political shifts in Washington. Changing rules and heightened scrutiny have driven many people to seek expert help.

Professor and advocate for fairer immigration

Beyond legal practice, Dr. Vinicius Bicalho also works as a lecturer, reinforcing his mission to spread knowledge. He is involved in training new professionals committed to ethics and responsibility in immigration law. His dual role in practice and education strengthens his influence in the field.

Clients and colleagues often highlight his transparency and commitment to a fairer, more accessible immigration process. His approach aims to align realistic expectations with legal possibilities. In a context of rapid change, this posture has helped build long-term trust.

    Statement from Vinicius Bicalho

“Being recognized by The New York Times for the third year in a row is an enormous honor — especially in 2025, when so many challenges have emerged with the new Trump administration guidelines. Representing Brazil on such a selective list reinforces the importance of the work we do every day at Bicalho. None of this is individual. It is the result of a technical, dedicated team that is genuinely passionate about what it does.”

For Bicalho, the recognition underscores both the responsibility and the reach of his work at this critical moment. He insists on sharing the merit with his team. In his view, collective effort is what makes it possible to navigate an increasingly demanding immigration landscape.
